Tuesday Thoughts – 06 September 2016

Today in rotation is one of my favourite pocket pen, Muji Compact which is inked with KWZI IG Gummiberry. Muji Compact is perfect example of minimalist design and is very few of the pens with metal grip section that I like. The pen is made of Aluminium.

And thought for today comes from my Boss, DK Goel from previous organisation. He always use to say in Hindi “Kaam na karne ke sau tareeke hai par karne ka sirf ek”.

So today’s thought is inspired by one of my professional life guru and ex Boss who is a Civil Engineer by profession and also a writer and a Professor.

Tuesday Thoughts – 28 June 2016

The thought / quote today comes from the one of the most prominent American Architect, LOUIS I. KAHN. His building displayed the Monumental characteristics.

The quote today describes the importance of nature with contrast to built structure.

The pen in rotation is beautiful blue colour Hero 616 – II which is inked with Sailor DoYou.

Pen Review – Wality 52 PD

The pen I am reviewing today and actually using for quite long is Wality 52 PD. And this is my every day carry (edc) pen.

Wality 52 PD
Wality 52 PD

This is actually the second Wality pen I bought after Wality 69 A, because i liked the way 69 A wrote. Wality pens are manufactured by Airmail Pen Company based out of Mumbai, India. Like 90% of my pens this pen also was procured from ASAPENS also. It is also available at Fountain Pen Revolution albeit at Higher price.

Design:

This pen arrived along with my other Wality pens like 71JT, 70 AM and Pilot 78G BB Nib. This actually is my second Wality pen and it happens to be a piston filler. It comes in variety of colors like green, teal, burgundy, blue and black.

Wality 52 PD - Uncapped
Wality 52 PD – Uncapped

Like my previous Wality pen this also gives a certain pungent odor and from what i have come to know is that they they have used a LDPE plastic, which smells a bit. I washed it with detergent water and also kept it overnight in detergent water but still a faint smell persists which now at the time of writing review has subdued.

The pen is a classic design and has an amazing build quality for an inexpensive pen. Unlike many Chinese pens (no offence) this pen has a certain character and recall value.

Classic Design with matte finished silver cap and clip inspired from the skyline series. And has that feel and character to it which makes it my EDC pen.

The pen actually feels quite solid in hand and has certain heft to it. The cap top and bottom of pen are rounded and pen itself is quite straight without any tapering towards bottom or top.

Rounded top and bottom.

The Nib is monotone gold colored and the cap has inner lining of plastic and actually the matte silver metal is molded with the plastic. Also there is a inner plastic lining to prevent ink drying.

The pen cap open in 2 1/2 turns. The Clip is also silver colored and quite sturdy and springy at the same time. No complaints whatsoever in those regards.

There is an ink window on the barrel just below the threads which actually is beneficial to get the idea of ink levels.

This piston filler mechanism at the bottom is separated from main barrel via a silver colored ‘O’ ring.

Below are the images showing the comparison in size with other models.

This retro look classic design pen is built for lifetime and rough tough usage. Full marks to the build quality.

Balance:

Its a regular sized pen measuring 135 mm when capped and 120 mm when uncapped including the nib.

Even though the plastic used is quite sturdy and thick but that doesn’t make the pen heavy. Yes the metal cap gives it a certain heft if you prefer writing with the cap posted at the back. However i prefer writing with cap unposted.

Feels extremely well balanced when writing with the pen unposted.

Even though the pen when posted makes it suitable for large sized hands but as mentioned earlier ads good amount of heft to pen which will make it unbalanced for small sized hands.

This is perfectly sized pen for my small hands and i prefer writing with cap unposted.

Nib and Ink Filling Mechanism:

The gold colored monotone nib was bit scratchy initially but after certain amount of tuning and smoothing of nib, it writes perfect. The Nib comes with engraving of “Wality Special Tipped Iridium”.

The nib now writes with the perfect fine line which gives you a welcomed good amount of feedback. And actually you will love the feedback this nib gives you and it is by no means scratchy.

Wality 52 PD - Nib Bottom, Feed side view

Feed is made of ebonite and has a quite a good supply of ink. The nib and feed are well inserted in the section and up till now there has been no ink burping or leakage as i beleive there is no air gap.

And as far as the ink filling mechanism is concerned it is a piston filler, the best way to fill ink. Love the pen.

Below is my hand written review showing the flow of ink, line width and ink drying detail also.

CONCLUSION:

This pen is a nice buy for the price it demands. Well I would recommend to add it your collection as it is a piston filler which is mostly present in premium pens.

Pen Review – Jinhao 886 (Colorful Cute Bullet)

I am amazed by the n number of  inexpensive pens without the compromise on quality front from major of the Chinese pen manufacturers especially Hero and Jinhao…. There are other expensive Chinese pen also there with the likes of duke, kaigelu….

Recently i got hold of lot of Jinhao pens which I will be reviewing in future days to come one by one.

Today I am reviewing “Jinhao 886” what looks like an big bullet…

Jinhao 886
Jinhao 886

Design & Built :

The pen looks and is built like a bullet. Its construction quality is amazing. Not very heavy not that light also. Just apt for its size. Yes, this is a small size pen which looks very cute.

Comes in variety of colors like neon green, blue, gold, black, and red. These are the only colors that i have seen up till now.

Jinhao 886 - Various Colors
Jinhao 886 – Various Colors

The pen looks very cute and beautiful. I have recently developed craze for small pens. Acquiring Kaweco Lilliput, Kaweco Ice Sport and Pilot Petit 1 recently. And yes i believe this pen stands out there as among the best. Also I am trying to get one small pen customized but that for the later.

The pen barrel and cap are metal which are painted in various finishes. The cap itself is small and gets easily posted at back. The cap easily comes out in 2 turns. AND yes one more thing just like Jinhao 159, this pen has threaded section and cap easily snugs in to the pen after 2 turns.

Jinhao 886 - Silver Cap with Choir Logo at Top.
Jinhao 886 – Silver Cap with Choir Logo at Top

The built quality is impeccable for such lowly priced pen. The clip of the pen is sturdy and tight  with choir logo at the top of clip, visible in pic above. There is silver colored center-band which is in tapered profile towards the barrel.

The Section is made of black colored plastic which seems to be of good quality unlike the foul smelling Walitys.

Jinhao 886 - Taken Apart
Jinhao 886 – Taken Apart

The pen comes with screw type converter which is of acceptable quality. Though i have yet not tried but i believe the pen can be used as an eye dropper also.

The cap top and bottom of barrel are rounded and its quite a neat job they have done with the pen.

Jinhao 886 - Curved Cap Top and Barrel Bottom
Jinhao 886 – Rounded Cap Top and Barrel Bottom

The section top has silver O ring which ads to the aesthetics of the pen. And the nib is also silver monotone nib.

Jinhao 886 - Section with Silver O ring at the top

The cap has inner plastic lining to prevent the drying of ink. Also in the image below we can see that clip of cap is screwed inside.

Few images below shows the comparison with different pens purely for an idea of size.

Overall I am  far more than happy with design and built of pen and probably thats one of the reason i bought whole box of pen. Though i fear over the period of rough use will do certain damage to paint finish of the pens.

Balance:

The size of pen is 122 mm when capped and 115 mm when uncapped, thus smaller than regular pens. The pen great to hold. The grip section is also quite comfortable and it feels great to hold the pen. The pen is extremely well balanced when writing without the cap posted at back.

IMG_20150226_092904~2
Jinhao 886 – Writing Unposted

Posting cap ads a bit of length to otherwise small pen and also a bit of heft to pen but not much. Therefore i believe many people will enjoy writing with this pen with cap posted at the back.

Jinhao 886 - Cap Posted
Jinhao 886 – Cap Posted

People who prefer writing with small pens must grab this pen. The best part is that the cap posts tightly at the back.

Bottom line is its a very well balanced pen whether the cap is posted or not. People with very large hands might have trouble holding the pen.

Nib and Ink Filling Mechanism:

The nib where it shines more and probably this is one of the strongest reason i bought complete box of the pen.

The pen comes with silver monotone nib with marking of ‘Jinhao -18 KGP’ like all of their nibs. The nib writes western Medium and that too very smoothly. Ink flow is quite wet.

Jinhao 886 - Nib Top

Jinhao 886 - Nib Side View
Jinhao 886 – Nib Side View
Jinhao 886 - Nib Bottom showing fins of feed
Jinhao 886 – Nib Bottom showing fins of feed

The feed is made of plastic and ink filling mechanism is through converter which hold good amount of ink. The converter I believe is better than what i got with Jinhao 156. The converter is screw type converter.

Jinhao 886 - Inner section which connects to cartridge or converter

Below are the few images of my handwritten review which shows the sample of writing.

Jinhao 886 - Page 1
Jinhao 886 – Page 1
Jinhao 886 - Page 2
Jinhao 886 – Page 2

The pen writes medium wet. There was no skipping. Have been using pen for past 3-4 days never had a dry start.

Conclusion:

I would put this pen in the ranks of X-450, X-750 and 159. But a small pen which writes amazingly well must grab for people who love small pens.
