I have stocked up lot of inks, especially inks like Chelpark, Camlin, Bril and Sulekha. All these are region specific like Chelpark is easily available in North India and Bril’s availability is limited to Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai, and Sulekha only available in Kolkatta that too few colors against 11 colors listed on webpage and lastly Camlin is available pan India.

The review is about the Bril Royal Blue Ink, which happens to be my first ink review.

And before I go further I would really like to thank Visvamitra and Lgsoltek, whose ink reviews I personally like a lot and is the inspiration for the ink review.

Also I would like to add that i got the inks as a gift from one of my friend and fountain pen enthusiast, Rakshit Pai.

Bril inks are one of the most used and admired inks in India. Bril has been in existence since 1964 and are based out of Bangalore.

Conclusion:

I like the shade of blue this Bril offers. Also it is dirt cheap and yes it is somewhat not washed out by water. It definitely gives many expensive inks run for its money.

To add to all this i have been using this ink in lot of my expensive pens and never faced any problem even in demonstrators leaving no stain marks.

MUST BUY even if the price is not considered.

Hi Vaibhav. I recently purchased a bottle of this ink and i am using it in my Pilot Metropolitan with fine nib. I don’t know if this is a placebo effect of some sorts but i feel the nib to be a bit scratchy while using this pen. Before I used this ink i was using Waterman’s Mysterious blue in the pen. I cleaned the pen well before filling it with Bril ink. Do you this ink makes the pen scratchy?

Some inks have lubrication and wetness associated with them …
It is very much possible that the ink can give a feel of nib to be smoother or vice versa

Very nice review, these reviews have enticed me to find my fountain pens too.
However, I am not able to source any small ink bottle except Quink for NCR. Further, Bril website requires minimum order size of Rs. 500. Other colors except blue and black are not available at all.
    Can someone pls guide?

I think you can buy the ink easily in the website from. BRIL and there is no other way to buy colored inks cheaper than that..
500 rupees is nothing compared to the International ink makers.. Also i believe u can get these inks from Ravi pens in South ex in Delhi

Hey! You can give them a call or send them an email for orders below Rs. 500/-. The attendants are very polite and helpful. I purchased a set of all their available inks (they cost Rs. 25/- per bottle now) and it came to below Rs. 250/-. Feel free to email them.

Very Nice review. Would not have sought this ink if it wasn’t for your write up. What would you prefer for your go to Blue stock: Bril or Pilot blue black?
Availability in Bombay is an issue as well. Will need to hunt more aggressively.

I have been using fountain pens for 60 years. And Bril ink since it entered the market. ( more than 50 years now! ) Before that, in my student days,I used its predecessor called “Iris”. I have tried other inks like Parker Quink, Chelpark, Camlin and a former local brand called ‘Krishnaveni’ – all in the Chennai-Bangalore belt. But no ink comes near Bril in performance. Thank you for your review. This Indian product is underrated- it is so inexpensive! It is very much like the underrated Indian pens!.
However, it is difficult to get all colours of the ink in the retail stationery shops even in Bangalore where the manufacturer is located! Say, good product ill served by bad business arrangement.

Brilliant review and excellent photography. Thank you. I only wish there were some way to obtain Bril and Suleka inks in Canada. I managed to get some Chelpark and Camlin and now Chelpark Turquoise is my favourite blue ink. The others still elude me, which is kind of surprising. One would have thought some enterprising soul would have found a way to sell ink that costs 25 cents a bottle for 10 times that here in NA — but maybe some day. I hope will publish more reviews showing the various other colours in the range from these manufacturers who are quite exotic and unattainable for those of us living here.

Thank you so much for liking the review.
Sulekha is unobtainable here in India also. BRIL have recently started online distribution within India, otherwise they were only southern part of India only. Chelpark also has cut down on manufacturing of inks. They only manufacture in small lots and I was lucky enough to pick Chelpark turquoise 10 bottles.
All I can help you with is share some samples of the same. Like around 20 ml sample.

Nice review and nice pictures. Dried up colour saturation is the only attribute taken. I had the pleasure of using one bottle of this ink. I found this ink to be far superior to Camlin Royal blue thanks to the following properties :
    a) Thicker full bodied ink yet free flowing and free of sediments.
    b) Vivid rich colour, minimum change of hue/tone upon drying.
    c) Much better tip lubricity due to higher parts of glycerine/lanolin type agents.
    d) More stubborn and less washable in comparison to presnt day thin dilute Camlin ink. Reminiscent of Sulekha royal blue of our school days or perhaps even better.
